'Now and Beyond' is Theme for April's LJO Cappella Jazz Series Concert

04/05/25

A rich diversity of musical talents and selections offer an unforgettable experience for the finale of the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra's 2024-25 Cappella Performing Arts Center Jazz Series on April 24 and 25.

This year, the series proudly showcases La Crosse's top virtuoso vocal talents as they embark on their first adventure into the realm of big band jazz, says LJO bandleader Greg Balfany. Featured artists for the April concerts are:

  • Andy Temte: A multifaceted artist known as a singer, band leader and entrepreneur, Temte will captivate audiences with his renditions, including Paul Anka’s unique crossover version of Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life” and Michael Bublé’s soulful adaptation of “Feeling Good.”
  • Sue Orfield: A celebrated Wisconsin virtuoso, Orfield is set to mesmerize with her saxophone artistry and original compositions. She will perform contemporary arrangements of her works, such as the vibrant Latin excursion "Wakanda Park," and the hauntingly beautiful "Hope for the Girl."

In addition, the LJO will present a variety of selections previewing the themes of the 2025 Jazz in the Park summer concert series, including:

  • The Incredibles Concert Suite: This piece highlights the remarkable talents of lead trumpeter Jon Schipper and the dynamic saxophonist Jeff Erickson
  • Blues for Alice: Featuring the trombone section, this piece will showcase the John Wasson Whiplash arrangement.
  • Having Built In Deeper Water: A contemporary jazz exploration by Greg Balfany (soprano saxophone) and Jon Ailabouni (trumpet).

"Attendees at the Cappella Performing Arts Center can expect a diverse range of music styles, from slow and sultry to fast and funky, with a touch of Latin flair," Balfany says. "This series promises to deliver a captivating experience for all jazz enthusiasts."

The concerts start at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 24 and Friday, April 25, 2025, at the Cappella Performing Arts Center, 721 King St., La Crosse.

Tickets are available online or in person at the Cappella Performing Arts Center.
